Directed by Abdelhaï Laraki, this cinematic masterpiece has already made waves on the international stage, captivating audiences at the prestigious Tallinn Film Festival 2023 and achieving success at the 54th Goa IFFI 2023 in Asia. Recently featured at the Red Sea Film Festival in Djeddah 2023, “55” is now ready to take Moroccan audiences on a compelling journey.
The chosen release date of January 11, 2024, holds special significance as it pays homage to the 80th anniversary of the Independence Manifesto, a pivotal moment in the history of our nation. This carefully selected date adds an extra layer of historical resonance to the film.
Set against the backdrop of the vibrant Medina of Fès, this 100% Moroccan production immerses viewers in the final months of the French protectorate, a crucial period marked by heightened resistance against the French occupiers and the much-anticipated return from exile of the late Sultan Mohamed V.
Utilizing the historical natural settings of the Medina, a diverse cast of remarkable actors, including emerging talents and established stars, breathe life into this tableau of a pivotal period in Moroccan history. The audience experiences the events as if transported through time, witnessing the struggles of a colonized people through the innocent eyes of the young hero Kamal, portrayed by Ayman Driwi in his debut role on screen.
Kamal’s journey unfolds against the tumultuous backdrop of the anti-colonial resistance, and his discovery of platonic love with Aicha, played by the rising star of Moroccan cinema, Oumaima Barid, draws him inexorably into the fight alongside the student resistors of the Qaraouiyine.
Director Abdelhaï Laraki asserts, “A nation is also built through the stories it tells about itself.” He offers a nuanced historical journey, presenting a series of memorable scenes based on real testimonies. The cinematography, credited to Ayoub Lamrani, captures the essence of the era.
Laraki emphasizes the role of spontaneity and authenticity, particularly highlighting the crucial role women played in the organized struggle for independence. He sheds light on their fervor and determination, often overlooked in historical narratives.
As an independent auteur film, “55 / خمسة وخمسين” aims to be accessible to all, sparking curiosity and interest in this formative period of Moroccan history. It emphasizes the key elements of identity construction, showcasing a people’s determination to fight for freedom and independence. According to Laraki, this theme gains renewed relevance in the contemporary debate on the heritage and reclaiming the identity and history of Moroccans, especially at a time when formerly colonized peoples worldwide strive to fully break free from post-colonial domination.
Producer Caroline Locardi Laraki highlights, “The film has mobilized the creativity and dedication of 100% Moroccan technicians, from editing and post-production supervised by Walid Ayoub to the impressive artistic and technical achievements of the special effects team led by Soufiane Choutine, digital VFX crafted by Le Mounir Raiss, and the meticulous attention given to the costumes by Nadia Dahr Seddiki for actors, supporting roles, and extras, all achieved on a limited budget.”
